If you are on your feet all day, or even if you have a job sitting all day, you may find that your feet and legs are sore or feel heavy when you’re done work. Your legs are crucial for supporting you and keeping you mobile, so it’s important to take care of them as much as possible. Here are a few tips for keeping your legs healthy – even if you’re sitting all day.
Leg Exercises
Staying active is a crucial part of being healthy overall, and our legs are our biggest movers in being active. They support our ability to move and have the biggest muscles in our body. A few minutes of exercises every day can go a long way to helping your legs stay healthy. You can even do these while working or taking a quick break away from your desk.
Foot Flex
While sitting on a chair, move your feet in circles and stretch them by pointing your toes straight forward and up towards the ceiling. Repeat the circles and stretching about 10 times.
Tiptoe Stretch
Stand behind a chair, hanging onto the backrest or headrest for support. Straighten up slowly by standing on your tiptoes. Hold for a second or two, and then slowly lower yourself down again.
Foot Rocker
You will need to lay on the floor with your arms at your side for this one. Lift your legs, keeping your knees slightly bent, and stretch them towards the ceiling. Then, stretch your toes towards the ceiling and then back down towards the ground.
Staying active
If you have a job where you sit for most of the day, regular activities can really help to take care of your legs and feet. If your office is fairly close to your home, you can try walking to biking to work (when weather permits) or using the stairs instead of the elevator on a regular basis.
Sometimes we don’t have the time to dedicate to regular sports and working out, so small changes like these can easily be incorporated into your regular routine. They will help you notice a big difference.
Compression Wear
Compression clothing – like socks and stockings – can make a huge difference for those on their feet all day or sitting all day. The socks help to exert a controlled pressure along the legs, which helps to ensure proper circulation. This will help alleviate the pain and swelling you may be experiencing in your feet, and the benefits should be almost immediate.
Compression socks can also be very helpful if you have venous disorders like varicose veins, as they can really help to manage the symptoms and complications of living with those disorders.
